Where it all started
Our story begins over a century ago, when the Spiliadis family moved from Northern Greece to Istanbul and opened a hotel and restaurant on the coast of the Black Sea. There they soon gained popularity due to their excellent cooking, which they brought back to Greece in the 1920s.
Only a few decades later, Stelios Spiliadis would move to Baltimore to attend Johns Hopkins University (the school that would later become the Black Olive’s #1 customer!), meet and marry his wife, and start a family – and later a family-owned restaurant.
Our penchant for simple, traditional food is reflected in the offerings at the Black Olive restaurant, where many of our recipes are the same ones the Spiiliadis family used in back in the day.
So while our Fells Point location is still young, we are built on generations of passionate cooks whose desire to serve only the finest, freshest food is echoed by our own wishes to do the same.
